Chelan County has purchased 18 acres of land in Plain for $1.2 million to create the community's first park. The property, located east of Plain and across from Plain Hardware along State Haul Road, was bought from G&B Properties. County Commissioner Shon Smith, who represents Plain, called the purchase 'thrilled' and said it fulfills a community vision for a park.
The land, previously used for winter recreation and maintained by the Plain Valley Ski Trail nonprofit, includes ski trails and has been home to the Plain Valley Ski Team. The county secured joint irrigation and easement agreements with the seller. Chelan County Natural Resources will work with Plain Valley Ski Trail to develop a maintenance and operations plan for the park.
The $1.2 million purchase price will be split between $600,000 in lodging tax dollars and $600,000 from state sales tax credits. Plain Valley Ski Trail Executive Director Christie Wilder thanked property owner Grahame Watson, a Plain resident since 1988, for giving the group time to work with the county on the purchase. The county plans to develop the park to serve as a year-round attraction for both residents and visitors.
