Plain Community Gains First Park Through County Purchase

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

Chelan County Board of Commissioners purchased 18 acres of land in Plain for $1.2 million from G&B Properties, creating the community's first park. The property, located east of Plain near State Haul Road, was previously used for winter recreation and maintained by the Plain Valley Ski Trail nonprofit.

Commissioner Shon Smith, representing Plain and District 2, said the purchase fulfills a community vision to preserve open space. The county will split the $1.2 million cost between $600,000 in lodging tax funds and $600,000 from state sales tax credit funds. County Natural Resources will work with Plain Valley Ski Trail to develop a maintenance plan and design for year-round use.

Christie Wilder, executive director of Plain Valley Ski Trail, credited G&B Properties owner Grahame Watson for supporting the timeline needed to secure the land. The park will address a gap in Chelan County's rural communities, as Plain was one of the few without a community park. The county cited a tourism impact assessment identifying opportunities for visitor activities in less saturated areas.
